ADU (Accessory Dwelling Units)

An ADU is an acronym for Accessory Dwelling Units. An ADU house can be an attachment to your existing home, a detached, smaller home that is built on the same lot as your existing single-family home. They can be one or two levels and will usually contain 1-3 bedrooms, 1-2 bathrooms, a kitchen and living room.
A typical ADU is 550 square feet (51 m2), one and a half stories, with one or two bedrooms. Typical regulations require that the laneway home is built in the back half of a traditional lot in the space that is normally reserved for a garage.
What are the benefits of an ADU and why you should build an ADU?
- Income from renting it out
- Having a guest suite for family and friends
- Increasing your property value

What Changed in California? In 2021 California passed Senate Bill 9, titled the California Housing Opportunity and More Efficiency Act, in to law. The new law creates a legal process by which owners of certain single-family homes may either build two 800-square-foot homes or one duplex on their property, to result in a maximum of four housing units on a formerly single-family lot, and prohibits cities and counties from directly interfering with those who wish to build such homes.
